The nose offers elegant aromas of spices, fresh thyme and rosemary, red berries, cassis and raspberries, with layers of cedar. The mouthfeel is full and rich with cassis, raspberries and notes of black pepper and oregano. The finish is bright and fresh with finely grained tannins.
San Carlos Vineyard (1090m/3576ft). Alluvial origin. Loamy sandy soil with thick calcareous layers with rounded rocks on the bottom (70% Sand - 10% Clay - 20% Silt).
This wine goes through cold maceration for 3 days at 50ºF (10ºC). The juice is then fermented for 20 days with a post-fermentation maceration of 10 days. 12 months in barrel (35% new). Barrel selection varies depending on vineyard and vintage - 100% French oak.

(from a 2002 planting): Dark ruby-red. Aromas of crushed blackberry, black cherry, minerals, violet, dark chocolate and licorice are complemented by harmonious oak tones of chocolate and mocha. Juicy, penetrating yet seamless wine with lovely intensity and clarity of flavor. Urgent dark fruits are complicated by a spicy quality. Shows lovely inner-mouth lift and a light touch. The rising finish features firm, suave tannins and a touch of peppery herbs. This is excellent.See detailed press review

Made with cuttings from Château Lafleur in Pomerol - not a bad source, it must be said - this is quite an oaky style, but has enough grassy, leafy fruit flavours to balance the vanilla spice...See detailed press review
