  • About this winery

Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Reaching such lofty goals in a very short period of time makes one wonder if the original founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand had an angel watching over their...

  • Tasting notes

The Montes Alpha Syrah is an intense ruby-red color. The nose presents floral aromas with tobacco and leather notes. This is a very elegant wine with strong, smooth tannins and tremendous body on the palate.

  • Viticultural notes

The 2015 season was dry with considerable luminosity and very good temperatures, which enabled the fruit to develop without threat of disease. Despite a summer with very high temperatures, including some historic peaks in March, the grapes reached the winery without excesses of dehydration, and therefore the alcohol levels are well balanced.

  • Winemaking notes

The grapes were very healthy upon arrival at the winery and resulted in wines with very good color and tannins and excellent phenolic ripeness. We changed some of the techniques used in the winery this season, such as fermenting at lower temperatures while maintaining our policy of not macerating with stems and avoiding the excessive use of mechanical procedures. This change has resulted in wines that are very elegant and balanced with beautiful color and especially great harmony.

A focused and beautiful red with blackberry, pepper and concrete aromas and flavors. Medium body. Firm and polished finish.

The grapes that go into Alpha all come from the slopes above the winery, making a big, bold, extracted style with lots of colour and concentration, firmish tannins and 15% new oak. Powerful stuff...
