Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Reaching such lofty goals in a very short period of time makes one wonder if the original founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand had an angel watching over their...
Elegant and subtle pink in colour. Syrah delivers an intense and fruity nose with fresh red fruit aromas, while Grenache contributes a fresh palate and smooth, pleasing finish.
Grapes were grown in vineyards at the “El Arcángel” finca (estate) in the Marchigüe Valley. The soils are granitic with profiles that show a mixture of matter deposited by glacial and colluvional activity and present diverse amounts of clay and organic matter. Both the Syrah and the Grenache are trellised to vertical shoot position and planted to a density of 5,555 plants per hectare. Average yields are up to 9,000 kg/ha. The plants are managed to maintain optimal foliage until harvest, which helps obtain fruit with an excellent ratio of sugar to acidity.
After picking, grapes were destemmed and pressed immediately to prevent excess extraction of color. After pressing, the must was racked to a static decantation tank for 12–18 hours of contact. The wine was inoculated with commercial yeasts (Saccharomyces cereviciae) that allow for very good expression of fresh red fruit notes and also ensure proper fermentation kinetics. Fermentation lasted 15 days at 13º–14ºC.
