  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

  • Viticultural notes

The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards made by fourth generation vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we are pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years. Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza's high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.

  • Winemaking notes

This wine goes through an extensive cold maceration for 5 days at 48°F (8,8°C) to extract aromas. The juice is then fermented for 12 days with a post-fermentation maceration of 19-22 days. Wild Yeasts. Elevage: 12 months in barrel. Barrel selection varies depending on vineyard and vintage - First, second and third use barrels used.

Velvety and luscious with substantial depth; balanced and bright with fresh, elegant style.

    April 2018

This is a dense and refined red with a minerality underneath. Full body, firm and silky with pretty blue fruit and light salt undertones. Shows tension and structure.

    May 2018

A pan-regional Malbec that combines fruit from the Uco Valley and Maipú, this is a plush,
ripe, textured red that uses French and American oak to good effect with notes of ginger
spice, blackberry and liquorice and a supple finish.

    June 2018

I compared the 2016 with the 2017 Catena Malbec, one of their most popular bottlings. Even though the vintage was not as cool as 2016, the wine keeps great freshness and elegance and is very harmonious, with integrated oak and focused flavors.

    - Year's Best Argentine Malbec -

    June 2018

Marked by herbal note sand violet aromas, this has the stamp of Uco Valley in its fresh flavours and black cherries. Its acidity is tense, balanced by the ripe flavours in an enchanting finish, lasting on the scent of flowers.

    Stephen Tanzer, July 2018

(13.3% alcohol; bottled last November; 95% of this wine is from Uco Valley fruit, the rest from Lunlunta): Bright ruby-red. Expressive aromas of dark raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, licorice, violet, tobacco and herbs, plus a whiff of leather. The palate delivers lovely pure dark fruit flavors at moderate alcohol, with hints of peppery herbs and minerals giving the wine very good cut and lift. Finishes classically dry and long. A lot of wine for the price.
