  • About this winery

Alma Negra was founded by Ernesto Catena, a 4th generation winemaker of Italian descent who, having spent a part of his life working as a designer and being a fervent student of Renaissance humanism, sees it as his mission to transform everything in his wine world into art, from growing the grapes to making wine to selling it. • Tasting notes

Purplish red in colour, this red boasts a intense nose exuding animal, woody, empyreumatic, spicy, floral and fruity aromas. Discover this full-bodied wine expressing refreshing acidity and offering a broad texture and fleshy tannins. It also unveils a intense mouthfeel that leads into a long finish.

  • Winemaking notes

Alma Negra (translating to 'dark soul') is a blend of Bonarda and Malbec , the bend though is a Mystery! Grapes for Alma Negra are sourced from vineyards owned by Ernesto (Valle de Uco, Agrelo, La consulta, Vistaflores and Rivadavia vineyards) along with a handful of growers with whom Ernesto works with daily basis to improve the fruit's yield and quality.

Robert M. Parker, Jr, February 2014

A real discovery for me, this Mendoza winery has turned out an absolutely sensational blend of Bonarda and Malbec to create the Alma Negra 2012 M Blend. Offering up loads of deep black cherry, strawberry and blackberry fruit, a hint of spring flowers, terrific texture, a medium-bodied mouthfeel and silky opulence, this is a gorgeous wine from vineyards at a 3,600-foot elevation. The Bonarda seems to give the wine an uplifted fruit quality and the Malbec a more serious density and richness. This is a big-time winner and also a great package, since Alma Negra means “Black Soul,” and the picture on the label is indeed sinister.
