  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. • Tasting notes

This wine shows a dark violet color with purple reflection. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark and red fruit aromas with delicate floral notes of violets and roses along with traces of chalk-stone and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and full, with notes of sweet spices and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft and very well integrated tannins with bright, crisp acidity giving the wine exceptional length.

  • Viticultural notes

This wine goes through cold maceration for 5 days at 50ºF (10ºC). The juice is then fermented for 16 days with a post-fermentation maceration of 10 days. 12 months in barrel (35% new). Barrel selection varies depending on vineyard and vintage. 85% French, 15% American oak.

  • Winemaking notes

Family vintners for over 100 years, the Catenas are recognized for their pioneering role in high-altitude viticulture and in leading Argentina's Malbec revolution. In the 1950´s, Don Domingo Catena began sourcing Malbec from the historic vineyards of Vista Flores. Domingo prized the region's Malbec for its dark colored and structured tannins.

    July 2017

(from clay, sand and rocky parcels): Bright ruby-red. Floral, high-pitched, penetrating scents of blackberry, violet and menthol. Quite penetrating and dry on the palate; at once more medicinal and more angular than the Appellation La Consulta wine with but lovely floral lift. In the rather serious style of a northern Rhône wine and in need of another year of patience. Finishes broad and dusty, with firm tannins, strong berry fruit and little in the way of easy sweetness.
