  • About this winery

In the late 60s, Joseph Phelps was running one of the largest construction companies in the U.S. when he won the bid to build Souverain Winery (now Rutherford Hill) located a few miles outside of St. Helena. Enamored with the beautiful Napa Valley and contemplating a career change, in 1973 he bought the 600-acre Connolly cattle ranch in Spring Valley, and began planting vineyards. • Tasting notes

The 2016 Chardonnay has a fragrant bouquet mix of honeysuckle, green apple and lemon peel with richly layered baked apple, stone fruit and a light toasty oak influence. A bright and focused wine with pleasing mouth feel and a delicate tropical touch on the finish.

  • Viticultural notes

The 2016 Sonoma Coast growing season began with a warm, mild winter resulting in an early bud break at the beginning of March. A normal period of bloom and veraison took place in early May and mid-July, respectively. The 2016 growing season was cooler compared to the previous three vintages, especially in August and September, allowing for delicate aromas and flavors to develop slowly in the Chardonnay blocks.

  • Winemaking notes

On the Sonoma Coast, our vineyards are picked under lights to preserve fruit integrity and freshness in the fruit, followed by whole cluster pressing cold directly to barrel for fermentation. Barrels were stirred as necessary during a long malolactic fermentation, resulting in a luscious, textured wine.

    August 2017

Voluptuously succulent and welcoming, this coastal wine seduces with its caramel apple, pear and preserved lemon flavors, edged with high-toned acidity and an exotic touch of seaspray. That sense of the sea plays out on the palate in texture, too, with a stony note that lingers in nutty spice.

    February 2017

The Chardonnays are all barrel-fermented in puncheons and barrels, and go through 100% malolactic. The 2015 Chardonnay Freestone Vineyard has a rock star nose of opulent pineapple, guava and green mango notes with touches of brioche and butterscotch. Medium-bodied with a satiny texture, it fills the palate with intense tropical fruits and savory flavors, marked by a lively backbone and finishing with some minerality.
