    Historically Macon was known primarily as a source of vast quantities of cheap white wines made by village cooperatives - reliable everyday wines, but no match for the great whites of the Cote de Beaune. But that was then and this is now, and today Macon's whites are recognized to be among the very best wine values on the planet.     (this fruit, which was harvested on August 29, gained a full degree in potential alcohol during its last day on the vines, according to Jean-Guillaume Bret, to 14.5%): Enticing aromas of crystallized lemon and lime. At once rich and juicy, showing serious concentration and a firm texture. There's a bit more sweet oak presence here than in the La Verchère but this wine was actually 90% done in cuve and the rest in old barrels. It was still carrying four grams of residual sugar when I tasted it in September but Bret was confident that it would finish fully dry.
