An intense aroma of ripe Satsuma plum, mocha and toasty, roasty notes, mingle with hints of cedar and sweet spice. Rich, sweet fruit is balanced wonderfully with briary and sweet spice and lovely, silky tannins. A medium to full bodied, textured wine showing great complexity with hints of cedar and biscuit and in combination, flows through to the lengthy, fruitful and spicy finish.
Good winter rains and warmer temperatures in early spring brought about slightly earlier bud burst and excellent shoot growth. A lovely growing season with no crazy, stormy or very windy northerly weather to affect flowering resulted in a great fruit set across all varieties. However, the northern Barossa, and a few other seemingly random patches of vineyard, were hit by late frosts resulting in a huge loss for that sub region. After a quite chilly Christmas and New Year the warm and dry weather was upon us, perfect ripening weather. An early and fast vintage for the Barossa Valley had Langmeil at full fermentation capacity for three and a half weeks meaning 75% of the grape intake in less than a month! The later ripening varieties like Grenache and Mataro still took their time and of course Eden Valley Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are always late – so vintage soon wound down to a leisurely pace ending in the middle of April. Overall 2015 was an excellent vintage with great flavour, colour and intensity across the board.

It feels lightish at first but it's not. As it breathes it builds and builds. Before long, the full size and extent is apparent. This is a monumental red wine, as seamless as it is solid, its folds of sweet coffee and black berried flavour sweeping through the palate with quite irresistible force. Tannin is brilliantly well handled; its the axis around which the density revolves. This wine doesn't tilt at or hope for quality, it declares it.See detailed press review

One of the treasures of the Barossa Valley is this Shiraz vineyard in Tanunda, planted in 1843. Langmeil's 2015 The Freedom 1843 Shiraz is a rich, opulent example of Barossa Shiraz, loaded with blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit, buttressed by just the right amount of soft, creamy oak. Full-bodied yet lively, it has a deftness to its feel that makes it all too easy to drink. While it's mostly about ripe fruit and vanilla oak at this point, these wines consistently acquire more savory complexity over time while retaining their lovely textures.See detailed press review
