  • About this winery

Roberto de la Mota is one of Argentina's most respected and admired winemakers. His long career in wine began when he was just 19, working with his renowned father Raul, who made wine at Bodega Weinert for 20 years (at the time Robert Parker declared that Weinert was making 'the most profound red wine in South America'). A layered red with blackberries, blueberries and chocolate. Vanilla, too. Full body, round and chewy tannins. Solid. A blend of malbec, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Needs time to soften. Try in 2020.

    May 2018

Mendel’s pan-Mendoza blend combines Malbec with 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, using fruit from Luján de Cuyo and Paraje Altamira. Scented, chalky and refined, it has haunting balance, fennel and blackcurrant leaf flavours and the concentration to age further in bottle.

    July 2018

(a disparate blend from vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley): Bright, deep ruby to the rim. Captivating floral lift to the aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and minerals. Supple, densely packed and impeccably balanced, displaying terrific concentration and savory minerality, not to mention juicy inner-mouth violet lift. This very precise wine exerts a light touch and finishes with firm, building, tongue-saturating tannins, a note of rose petal and terrific length. This struck me as even fresher than the 2014 version but a bit less ripe in its aromas. De la Mota aged the wine in "nearly 100% new oak" but likes to put a portion of the Malbec into second-use Taransaud barrels.
