Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Deep and intense carmine red in color with violet highlights. The complex nose offers outstanding aromas of figs and blackberries complemented by notes of crème de cassis, while spices appear over a backdrop of dark chocolate, leather and tobacco. Silky on the palate with perfectly rounded tannins that trigger an explosion of the fruit on the mid-palate. Tremendous volume and structure as it eases into its remarkably long finish—a faithful reflection of the virtues that the wonderful terroir of the Colchagua Valley offers year after year.
The 2014–2015 season was normal in terms of precipitation and the availability of water during the development of the phenological stages that need it most. Enough rain fell during the winter months to allow sufficient water to accumulate in the irrigation reservoirs to supply the growing season. There were no significant spring frosts in any of the areas where we grow our various red varieties. The temperatures were particularly high during the summer, with historic peaks in March and an average temperature that was 1.5ºC higher than that registered in the past 10 years. Nevertheless, the grapes reached harvest without problems with dehydration and with balanced potential alcohol and good pH and acidity levels. It was a year with considerable luminosity and very good temperatures, which allowed the fruit to develop disease free, with good skins, very good color, and an excellent degree of phenolic maturation, ideal for making high-end wines.
