Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Reaching such lofty goals in a very short period of time makes one wonder if the original founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand had an angel watching over their...
The Montes Alpha Carmenère is a deep and intense ruby red in color with bright violet nuances. The nose recalls ripe black berry fruit and plums with notes of black pepper and chocolate. The palate is especially smooth, well structured, and balanced with nicely rounded tannins and a long, pleasing finish.
The 2015 season was dry with considerable luminosity and very good temperatures, which enabled the fruit to develop without threat of disease. Despite a summer with very high temperatures, including some historic peaks in March, the grapes reached the winery without excesses of dehydration, and therefore the alcohol levels are well balanced.
The grapes were very healthy upon arrival at the winery and resulted in wines with very good color and tannins, and excellent phenolic ripeness. We changed some of the techniques used in the winery this season, such as fermenting at lower temperatures, while maintaining our policy on not macerating with stems and avoiding the excessive use of mechanical procedures. These modifications have resulted in wines that are very elegant and balanced with beautiful color and especially great harmony.

The 2015 'Alpha' Carmenère includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Colchagua Valley and 55% of the wine was aged for 12 months in first-use French oak barrels. Showing an extremely deep core, this wine begins with intense aromas of red bell pepper, exotic spices, red cherry preserves and suggestions of milk chocolate. The weight and mouthfeel are gorgeous as plush layers of black cherry, red currant, milk chocolate, green bell pepper and baking spice flavors coat the mid-palate. This finishes long and supple. Overall, an outstanding effort by Montes.See detailed press review
