  • About this winery

Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Reaching such lofty goals in a very short period of time makes one wonder if the original founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand had an angel watching over their...

  • Tasting notes

Montes Folly is an intense ruby red in color, and the very elegant nose offers aromas of blueberries and blackcurrants with light notes of chocolate and subtle toast. Robust and well balanced on the palate with smooth tannins and a long and pleasing finish. Montes Folly has consistently been recognized as one of Chile’s best Syrahs.

  • Viticultural notes

The 2014 season began in September 2013 with long and intense polar frosts that affected much of the country. Once the frost season had passed, budbreak and flowering occurred within the normal historic periods (September and October). The spring presented both cloudy and sunny days leading to a normal fruit set in the central zone of the Colchagua Valley. The last rain fell in August 2013, which resulted in reaching the water stress threshold in shallow soils in late November and in deeper soils in December, a full month earlier than in the previous year. December temperatures were in line with those of a normal year, which allowed for the recovery of growth rates and vineyard development. Veraison occurred in mid-January, in accordance with historic periods. The highest temperatures observed during the summer caused the grapes to ripen earlier in the season, which obligated the wineyard to be highly vigilant in order to harvest at the precise moment. The 2014 yields were lower than the historic average and the berries were smaller than usual. The grapes presented excellent concentration, good natural acidity, and ripe phenolics in the red varieties.

  • Winemaking notes

The grapes for Montes Folly grow on the steepest hillsides of the Finca de Apalta, where the vines have adapted best and have found good balance between yields and vegetative expression, resulting in low yields with highly concentrated fruit.

    March 2018

Incredible aromas of smoked meat, spice, ripe berry and hints of peaches. Some cloves, too. Granite with some gunpowder. Full body, layered and rich. A gorgeous and generous red.
