Adi Badenhorst is the charismatic winemaker who alongside Eben Sadie has put Swartland on the map. Outspoken, opinionated and talented, his charisma rubs off upon the wines he creates. Moreover, they are available at extremely affordable prices and serve as a perfect introduction to the delights of Adi's and Swartland's wines.

Secateurs – shape our bushvines during the winter pruning and are used to pick the ripe grapes in summer. Our family has, for the last three generations, nurtured our vines so that they can produce fruit of integrity. This is the 4th vintage of Secateurs Red blend bottled under the Badenhorst Family Wines. We are very happy with the quality of this wine and expect it to develop wonderfully over the next couple of years.

Neal Martin, April 2017

The 2015 Secateurs Red Blend, 71% Shiraz, 21% Cinsault and 8% Grenache, has a generous and well-defined bouquet of red plum, blackcurrant and dried rose petal aromas, revealing more black fruit as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, crisp acidity, more black than red fruit here with a slightly brittle but fresh as a daisy finish that belies the structure. It's one of the best Secateurs Red Blends that I have tasted.

....His Secateurs continue to provide a superb, very well-priced entry into the joys of Swartland wine, both the white and red omnipresent in bistros looking for good quality, punter-friendly wines. In a benevolent vintage such as 2015, his 2015 Secateurs red is an absolute cracker.

Adi is the nominal head of an anarchic group of like-minded nonconformists called 'Swartland Independents' who are collectively defining the cutting edge of the 'New South Africa'. The fact that the 'New South Africa' has a distinctly retro back-to-the-future vibe and smacks profoundly of the 'forgotten corners of old cellars' mentioned above is nothing less than perfect.
