Adrianna Vineyard, Tupungato

Wine Advocate on CATENA

Titre

I tasted a very large collection of wines from Catena Zapata. All of these wines are highly recommendable, but the wines from the Adrianna Vineyard range are truly gobsmacking good and world class.
Luis Gutiérrez, June 2018

Catena’s Adrianna Vineyard

Catena truly is one of the most exciting wineries on the planet. The attention to detail here is second to none and you would be hard pressed to find a producer who spends more time, effort and money on research, in addition to the pursuit of excellence.

The Catena Family’s Adrianna Vineyard is special for so many reasons. Planted at altitude in a quest to make fresher more structured wines Nicolas Catena was called crazy and told that the fruit would never ripen. Undeterred he planted anyway. The wines today are some of the freshest, most structured and balanced in all of Argentina. Due to the altitude the grapes produce dramatically thicker skins in order to protect the seeds from the sun (an adaptive evolutionary development in the quest to ensure propagation of the vine). This increases the phenolic material in the grapes substantially from those vinified at lower elevations. The altitude also allows for huge shifts in day and night time temperature which allow the grapes to get ripe, but retain ever important acidity. The balance obtained from this freshness is exactly what Nicolas hoped when he planted the vineyard. The increase in phenolics was a beautiful surprise and the site is exceeding the Catena’s already lofty ambitions.

Never a family to rest on their laurels, now under the stewardship of Laura Catena, the team’s studies are digging ever deeper into the soils and microbial life that make vines mere meters apart perform differently. The Adrianna vineyard is like owning an entire village in burgundy and the small block wines below are the Catena’s attempt to find their Grand Crus. This is not hyperbole. With all of their research efforts, the rate at which Catena is learning and increasing understanding about their land is unprecedented.

While we have used Burgundy as a reference to the Catena's quest to divine the distinctiveness of these small blocks of terrior we shouldn’t lose site of the fact that the terrior here is the sum of all its parts: Altitude, intense sun, complex soils, complex microbial life and that these conditions result in wines that are distinctly Argentine.

The scale of excellence here is astounding. Enjoy!

Luis Gutiérrez, December 2016

There are three separate bottling from the Adrianna vineyard, one of them the 2013 Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae, sourced from the part of the vineyard with slightly deeper soils (we're talking only about 70 centimeters here!) that has limestone underneath, is flatter and provides very aromatic, slightly lighter wines, more feminine if you like. It's very floral, gentle, with fine tannins with a good structure based on a combination with superb acidity. This is also lighter colored, the more Pinot of the three.
