Holiday Gift Guide: 10 Exceptional 95+ Point Wines

As the holidays approach we begin to see a plethora of lists from various publications and websites in the wine media highlighting the year’s Top 10 or Top 100 wines. These lists are often followed by calls to retailers and importers chasing wines that are long since sold out. We thought we would try a new approach this year and highlight some of the top scoring wines available in our portfolio right now!

All 10 of the wines below are in stock and available to order. The line has been drawn at a fairly difficult to achieve 95 points. Everything on this list scored at least 95 or above from a reputable media source. We are obviously very proud of the wines our partners produce and thrilled to import such a broad range of exceptional products. There should be something on the list below to appeal to nearly any wine taste: Brilliant Champagne – Bollinger; one of the New World’s greatest Chardonnays – Catena White Bones; Riesling from the Mosel’s exceptional 2105 vintage – Markus Molitor; perennial staff favorite M & C Lapierre Morgon; a trio of exceptional Pinots both New World and Grand Cru Burgundy – Hamilton Russell, Tolpuddle and Domaine Faiveley; Brunello from the sought after 2012 vintage – Siro Pacenti; and finally, two sensational Cru Barolos – Azelia and Aldo Conterno.

As always, click on any of the individual wines below to read more on our website or contact us directly if you have any questions – just hit reply. We love to talk about wine. Should this list not have anything of interest (impossible!) wait for part two next week!

WHITE WINE OF THE YEAR

It’s a high bar to clear, but this is the best release yet of this remarkable Chardonnay, sourced from limestone soils in Gualtallary. Subtle, leesy and delicately oaked, with pithy acidity and notes of citrus and struck match, it wouldn’t look out of place in a line up of Grands Crus Burgundies.

Wine Advocate, April 2017

The 2015 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Auslese ** (Golden Capsule) displays clear, intense, concentrated and perfectly ripe (stone-) fruit that does not show any hints of botrytis (but a single new barrel) although the grapes were partly botrytised yet perfectly sorted. Rich, round and lush like a Spätlese but finessed and elegant like a top class Auslese, this is an intense and creamy textured Rausch Auslese with an endless flow of very fine Riesling juice intermixed with lemon juice. The acidity is super fine but fresh and vital, and there are even very fine tannins that probably come from the Burgundian pièce that was blended with the 1000-liter stainless steel vat. This is a crystalline Auslese with clear and perfectly ripe fruit and a long, complex finish.

Decanter, November 2017

Marcel Lapierre is something of a hero to the natural wine movement, and his Morgon has been called The Original Natural Wine. This delivers star-bright, sappy, mouthwatering dark fruit with a completely irresistible energy. His wines sell out fast, so buy when you see it.

Tim Atkin, July 2017

The subtle changes that winemaker Emul Ross is making to the Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, allied to some replanting of virused blocks, is bearing fruit. For me, this is the best recent vintage of the wine, showing fine, perfumed red berry aromas, subtle oak, some whole bunch spice, savoury, compact tannins and impressive concentration.

James Suckling, January 2017

The fourth vintage under Shaw & Smith control, this has such immediate appeal and attractive style it will be hard to see this wine making it to many cellars. The nose is super expressive with swirling spicy red cherries and boysenberry-scented pinot noir fruit. It's gently sappy, showing some herbal notes and toasty, spicy oak. The palate has intensity, depth and length; it's fleshy and supple through the middle, but the ever-so-slightly tart red-cherry flavors are mouth-wateringly fresh. The tannins are perfectly groomed, and the acidity is pitch-perfect. A great vintage: They have totally nailed it!

Tim Atkin, February 2017

Erwan Faiveley thinks this is one of the wines of the vintage chez Faiveley, and I couldn’t agree with him more. Showing the classic coolness and haughty reserve of Latricières, the most elegant of the Gevrey Grands Crus, it’s chalky and refined with subtle oak and nuanced, pomegranate and wild strawberry flavours.

So much violet, licorice and berry character to this. Wonderful depth. Full body, dusty and chewy tannins and a persistent and intense finish. Layered mouthfeel. Drink in 2020.

Vinous, February 2017

The 2013 Barolo Margheria shows its typically high-toned, aromatic profile. Scents of lavender, sage, mint, leather and earthiness meld into a core of dark stone fruits. Veins of bright acidity and salinity give the flavors an extra kick of brightness on the finish. The relatively high-altitude of this site and the limestone-rich soils yield a brilliant, salivating Barolo. The Margheria was aged in cask.

James Suckling, March 2016

This is fantastic with cedar, strawberry, walnut and mineral aromas and flavors. Ultra-fine tannins and a clean finish. Balanced and refined. Why wait? But will be even better in 2018.
